Grizzlies Draft Jamaal Franklin with 41st Pick

With the 41st pick of the NBA draft, the Memphis Grizzlies take Jamaal Franklin.

The bad news is that Jamaal Franklin is not a particularly good 3-point shooter, hitting only 33% of his threes from the College line last season. That said, Franklin is a great passer, havoc creator in transition, and defender. Having the kind of player who can move the floor in interesting ways is important for the Grizzlies.

I can’t pretend I’m not disappointed that the Grizz didn’t take Southerland. Why take a player who’s skill set the Grizz have a lot of, instead of someone who can fill an immediate need?

It’s possible that the Grizz are trying to replicate Rudy Gay on a budget with Franklin, a move that I consider a mistake, for the same reason that holding onto Rudy would have been a mistake. It’s also obviously possible that Franklin gets traded.

Either way, while he may not fill a hole, and while he may not play at all, he could be playable immediately. He has a solid, usable skill set.
