Update: Alex Kennedy and Adrian Wojnarowski have officially broken the signing!:
Tony Allen returns to the Memphis Grizzlies on a four-year contract worth $20 million. Great signing, Memphis.

Exciting news for Grizz fans! THE GRINDFATHER IS RETURNING HOME. To get a sense of what the lead up to the breaking news was like (because really, it was more than a little funny) read the rest of the post below. And please follow the bottom link if you wanna get a better sense of what the Grizzlies cap space is going to look like now that TA is coming back on $5 million a year.
Allen was essentially the spiritual core of the Grizzlies, and the physical embodiment of the Grit and Grind system. Also, he’s pretty clearly the best perimeter defender in the league. There are lot of players who could have filled Allen’s role, but there’s no one else who really deserved it.
Just a few minutes ago, the Grindfather returned to Twitter, tweeting out this message:
Memphis stand up!!!! #GrizzNation
— Tony Allen (@aa000G9) July 3, 2013
That would seem like a good sign regarding Free Agency negotiations, especially considering that Allen reportedly recently met with members of the front office.
Immediately following Allen’s tweet, this tweet was sent out fellow Grizzlies blogger Ronald Tillery:
Griz reach deal with Tony Allen, per source. CA story coming
— Ronald Tillery (@CAGrizBlog) July 3, 2013
Similarly, Alex Kennedy of Hoopsworld and USA Today sports posted an encouraging message regarding TA’s return to Memphis.
There’s no official report as of yet, only really good signs, so we’ll be adding updates to this post as more information becomes available, including more official reports and probable deal terms.
In the meantime, maybe read up on what a Tony Allen return would mean for the rest of the Grizzlies’ Free Agency:
