To celebrate the Grizzlies being named the #1 franchise in America by ESPN The Magazine, Grizz CEO Jason Levien announced today in the Memphis Business Journal that team owner and known basketball enthusiast Robert Pera will take on Tony Allen in a game of 1 on 1. The event will take place on September 29, and if you’re in the area, good news: it’s open to the public.

Even better news? Zach Randolph will officiate. No, this is for real. Pera first floated the idea on Twitter last week, offering to spot Tony a couple of baskets and suggesting they play for charity. Tony’s response?

I think it’s safe to say the optimism surrounding the Grizzlies is at an all-time high. It’s been almost a year since Pera & Co. took over the team, and the mood is definitely brighter, even after a head coaching maelstrom to start the offseason and, for some, worrying trade rumors about Zach Randolph. This will also probably do wonders for Pera’s perception — the owner has been quiet as a church mouse since the ownership change, which is off-putting to some. Let’s just hope things don’t get too physical: the last thing we need now is a freak injury to the Grindfather.
