Marc Gasol turns 29 today! Happy Birthday! The fan favorite Grizzlies Center has a lot to celebrate about. Last night the Memphis Grizzlies continued their winning streak, defeating the Portland Trailblazers 98-81. The Grizzlies have now won 3 games in a row, all three against Playoff teams. Their record is a crisp 0.535 with 23 wins and 20 losses. Gasol has been playing with passion. Even though he is still recovering from a sprained MCL, he is averaging 14 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.1 blocks and a steal a game.
Over the last year from January 29, 2013 to January 29, 2014, we have watched Gasol blossom into a franchise star. Together with Randolph, the Grizzlies were able to successfully gain redemption against the Los Angeles Clippers after the first round debacle the year before. They eliminated the championship favorite Oklahoma City Thunder, and were able to reach the Western Conference Finals. As Marc Gasol turns 29 today, he will enter his prime years and will no doubt start his next birthday with a significantly large contract extension.
Gasol has proven himself a reliable force to be reckoned with in the post. What the future holds for the Grizzlies core as a whole is the question. Will the team keep Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph as the most fearsome tandem in the NBA’s front court? Randolph has been adamant about wanting to stay and remain loyal to the team. However, there has been chirping about Marc’s brother Pau possibly returning to Memphis.
There is certainly no happy scenario where Randolph or Pau should agree to come off the bench. Whether they are rumors or if Kobe Bryant would even let Mitch Kupchak trade his favorite teammate remains to be seen. The Lakers are free falling into the draft lottery with every game and Kobe is still out. The trade appears unlikely with Pau’s expiring contract.
Today is a day of celebration for the Gasol family. Marc and Pau are firmly entrenched as NBA cornerstones and winners, and younger brother Adria Gasol is a talented prospect in his own right. We are watching one royal basketball family bloom before our eyes. Happy Birthday!
