Dave Joerger has been named the Western Conference Coach of the month. Joerger, has lead the Memphis Grizzlies on a 12-3 record (.800) in the month of January. The youngest coach to ever win the award, Joerger has sparked the Grizzlies to 5 game winning streaks twice. Once from January 10th – 17th and again from January 24th – 31st. He wins on a month where Jason Kidd of the Brooklyn Nets has been named the Eastern Conference Coach of the month.
It’s certainly an interesting time in NBA coaching, with a changing of the guard. Mark Jackson, Jason Kidd, and Dave Joerger are among the youngest coaches of the NBA and all lead winners. The Grizzlies tied their franchise record for wins in January. Though the Grizzlies lost to OKC Thunder last night, this has been a good month for fans. For the first time this season, the team looks poised to take a shot at the playoffs. Gasol is rounding out to form, shots are falling, and chemistry is up. We could be looking at a potential upset in the first round if the Grizzlies earn the eight seed.
Dave Joerger, continues the Grizzlies strong defensive tradition holding opponents down to a mere 91.5 points per game. Teams are shooting 0.431 from the field against the Grizzlies and just 0.311 from the three point line. When Gasol returned from his injury on January 14th, the Grizzlies tightened up the belt and held opponents to an even lower 86.3 points a game. That’s a league low, and there’s no question the Grizzlies have one of the premier defenses in the NBA.
The Memphis Grizzlies are currently 13-7 on the road, the fourth best road record in the league. They’ve managed to stop the Milwaukee Bucks in their tracks on their home court, allowing just 77 points on January 15th. The loss against the Thunder is a small setback, for a Grizzlies team on the rise.
