On Friday night, Marc Gasol sprained his left ankle against the Miami Heat, and left American Airlines arena in a walking boot. There was obviously concern after the game that the Grizzlies would be forced to be without the services of the big man for at least a little while. But to the relief of the team, Gasol was able to play on Saturday and help the Grizzlies defeat the Pacers 82-71. He finished with 10 points and 9 rebounds in nearly 40 minutes of action.
While his ankle will remain something to monitor, the fact that he played as well as he did for as long as did just one day after the injury is really encouraging news. If there was any concern about the ankle going into this game, the Grizzlies would have either not played Gasol or at the very least not let him play nearly as many minutes as he did. It definitely appears that the Grizzlies dodged a bullet here. The Western Conference standings are really tight and it is of the utmost importance that the Grizzlies stay healthy. Hopefully Gasol experiences no further setbacks and the team is able to continue on its way to a playoff berth without any further injuries.
