Marc Gasol recently told Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal that he does not plan to leave the Memphis Grizzlies, via ProBasketballTalk:
“I’ve always said Memphis is my home away from home,” Gasol said. “Robert (Pera, Grizzlies owner) knows that. I know that. My teammates know that and that’s all that matters. I live day to day but I don’t see myself anywhere else.”
Gasol is the 2012-2013 defensive player of the year, and has been with the Grizzlies ever since he entered the NBA during the 2008-2009 season. Marc is 29 years old and will be 30 when he hits free agency after next season.
It might be wise for Gasol to start negotiating a contract extension with the Grizzlies, but might want to wait until free agency so he can get the maximum 5 year deal. If he signed an extension with the Grizzlies during the 2014-2015 regular season, he would only be able to extend his contract for another 3 seasons.
Marc is surely the anchor the Grizzlies need for years to come, and will hopefully continue to be that dominating defensive presence under the basket for the team of ‘grit n’ grind.’
Gasol has a career average of 13.5 pts, 7.9 reb, 1.5 blocks. In his 6 seasons with the Grizzlies, Gasol has played in 80 or more games during three of those seasons. 2008-2009 was the only season he appeared in all 82 games.
