Michael Winger will not interview with Grizzlies about assistant general manager position

Before Chris Wallace was confirmed as staying on as the Memphis Grizzlies GM, the team sought approval from the Oklahoma City Thunder about interviewing their assistant GM, Michael Winger.

The Memphis Grizzlies have received permission to interview Michael Winger, who is currently assistant general manager of the Oklahoma City Thunder. But Winger has declined the interview, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.

The Grizzlies’ position is currently viewed as more of an assistant general manager/possible GM in waiting with Chris Wallace continuing as GM for the foreseeable future.

Winger was hired by the Thunder from the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2010.

The Grizzlies will probably continue to pursue someone else to fill the assistant GM position, considering that they would potentially take over for Wallace down the road.  Winger has worked alongside OKC GM Sam Presti, who has assembled one of the West’s best teams that includes Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.
