Mark Stein is reporting that the Knicks are looking to trade for a 1st round pick in Thursday’s draft and that they are willing to part with Iman Shumpert to make it happen. The Grizzlies possess the #22 pick in Thursday’s draft and are selecting right in the range that the Knicks are targeting. The question that I thought of when I heard the Knicks were dangling Shumpert was “Should the Grizzlies make a deal for Shumpert?”. In my opinion, the Grizzlies should definitely consider it. Shumpert should be an attractive player for the Grizzlies because he defends decently well (1.7 steals per 36 minutes), has some scoring potential (9.1 points per 36 minutes), and is only 23 years old. The only real concern for Shumpert is that he wasn’t much of an outside threat last season, shooting only 33% from 3-point range. But if that can be improved, he could end up being a really nice fit since his potential on defense fits the “Grindhouse” mentality. He did shoot over 40% from 3-point range the previous season, so the potential is definitely there. When it comes to the draft, all options have to at least be discussed, and with the Knicks eager to trade into the first round, the Grizzlies should definitely consider giving up the #22 pick to get a promising young wingman in Iman Shumpert who can play both the point guard and shooting guard positions.
