Kevin Love’s NBA future is in gridlock because of Memphis Draft Picks!
Why is Love to the Cavaliers not a reality yet? The current rumor: Minnesota want draft picks the Cavs will not relinquish.
When the Grizzlies sent a future first for Cavs forward Jon Leuer to shed salary in a 2013 deal, they left themselves open. The Cavaliers could obtain a premium player by the Grizzlies if they select anywhere between 6-14 in 2015 and 2016.
Depending on the Grizzlies performance in the heavy-handed Western Conference, this might equal a possible lottery pick. If the Grizzlies were to decide to wait it out, their pick would be protected 1-5 in 2017 as well as in 2018. It will be completely unprotected in 2019 if the Grizzlies linger the pick along for such a stretch.
While the Miami Heat are unlikely to fall out of Playoff Contention in a weakened Eastern Conference, anything is possible in the West. Even to a team as solidly built as the Grizzlies. Uncertainty looms over giving up possibly lucrative draft picks. Already, the Cavilers would be sacrificing the number one pick of this year’s draft, Andrew Wiggins. Kevin Love may end up finalizing a deal with Chicago who are actively looking to get a deal done.
The Cavilers have spoken about this trade for too long now. As the saying goes.. If there is any doubt, there is no doubt. After spending years upon years in utter hopelessness and heartbroken from Lebron James leaving, it looks like the team is setting the stage for another decisive opt-out.
Their gambling of the present over the future, in this case, the Memphis Grizzlies future might be looked back on with utter disdain. Particularly, once the ink hits dry on a multiple year contract for one Kevin Love. For another team. Love can simply take his talents to Chicago. It appears once again, the Grizzlies are holding the tarot cards of Kevin Love’s future.
