Jordan Adams' rookie contract has bonuses to watch weight.

Grizzlies want Jordan Adams to keep weight down

Jordan Adams recently signed his rookie contract with the Grizzlies, and it turns out that there’s an interesting incentive written in:

This isn’t a common occurrence when it comes to NBA contracts, and it definitely has to do with Adams’ weight in college.  He was always a bit on the heavy side for his height, and he’ll need to stay lean to keep up in the NBA.  Hopefully the bonuses laid out in the contract help motivate Adams to stay in top shape.

CBS Sports also noted:

It’s unclear right now how often the Grizzlies will test the body fat percentage to see that Adams can keep his bonuses. Deeks also notes that Derrick Caracter had a conditional guarantee based on his weight, but the only other contract he could find specifically citing a body fat percentage was Marcus Williams out of Connecticut.

Well, it didn’t work out for Marcus Williams, but hopefully Adams’ situation will be different.  He certainly has potential, it’s just a matter of him making the right choices to reach it.

Adams was selected with the 22nd pick in the 2014 draft out of UCLA.
