Will Knicks pursue Marc Gasol next off-season?

Marc Gasol isn’t going anywhere…right?

Nobody needs to panic, but Marc Gasol is going to have potential suitors next off-season. And the Knicks are one of them.  While this makes it even more important for Memphis to lock him up as soon as they can, there doesn’t appear to be any need to rush.  Gasol has expressed wanting to stay in Memphis, especially given that it’s essentially his second home.  Back in June, he made this abundantly clear while speaking to Ronald Tillery of the Commercial Appeal:

“You know my relationship with Memphis and my relationship with the Grizzlies,” Gasol said via telephone from his native Spain. “I’ve always said Memphis is my home away from home. Robert (Pera, Griz controlling owner) knows that. I know that. My teammates know that and that’s all that matters. I live day to day but I don’t see myself anywhere else. Only time will time. But I don’t see a reason to change right now. Why would I change right now?”

This is reassuring news for Grizzlies fans in the wake of hearing New York’s interest in Gasol.  There is nothing imminent by any means, and although Marc is on the Knicks radar, they might go in a different direction according to Ian Begley:

The Knicks could have $18 million to spend in free agency in the summer of 2015. That may be enough to land a max player, such as Marc Gasol.

But Jackson said last month that the Knicks may instead look to sign multiple players with their cap space.

While it’s obvious that if the Grizzlies don’t re-sign Gasol to a multiyear extension he will be a hot free agent target, there is still plenty of reason to believe that he will remain in Memphis.  The Grizzlies have demonstrated loyalty to their players this off-season, as they re-signed both Zach Randolph and Beno Udrih.

That being said, although the Knicks might be interested in Gasol, odds are that we will see him in Grizzly blue for a long time.
