The Memphis Grizzlies have given Wade Baldwin the keys this summer, and he has a big challenge ahead of him in this game.

Last season, many people expected Wade Baldwin to take over the Memphis Grizzlies’ backup point guard spot. The 2016 first-round pick had the athleticism and shooting – at least that’s what his college numbers said – to contribute immediately. However, it wasn’t the case. After a strong debut, he found himself out of the rotation and in the D-League. It definitely wasn’t a scenario many Grizz fans expected.

Now, he’s out to prove his worth in the Summer League. During this time, Baldwin will be given the keys and a long leash to show that he can lead and orchestrate a winning offense. He had an up-and-down first game, scoring 19 points on 6-for-17 shooting but only one assist. He did a fine job of moving the basketball and staying aggressive, but the Twitter ridicule kept flowing.

In this matchup, he has a true Summer League test in De’Aaron Fox, the number five pick in this year’s draft. The point guard out of Kentucky will be a difficult matchup for Baldwin. He’s lightning quick from baseline to baseline. He has a filthy stepback jumper and a nice first-step. Many people have compared his game to John Wall, but I see a louder Mike Conley in him. Like the Conductor, he’s really good about vocally orchestrating the offense.

For Baldwin to silence the naysayers, he must use his experience and size to make life difficult for the rookie. In addition, he has to stay composed when leading the offense as Fox will be out to make Wade’s life just as hard.

It’d be a great sign for the Memphis Grizzlies going forward if Wade Baldwin can have a great game against one of the league’s most promising young point guards.

Other Key Matchups

Wayne Selden vs. Buddy Hield

After a dominant performance yesterday, Selden has a test in Buddy Hield. The former National Player of the Year can flat get buckets. Last season, he averaged 10.6 points (15.1 with Sacramento) on 39.1 percent shooting. If Selden can outshine “Buddy Buckets” in this game, he’ll certainly continue to turn heads.

Dillon Brooks vs. Justin Jackson

Last year’s PAC-12 and ACC Players of the Year will go toe-to-toe in this one. Both have a fairly similar game in the fact that both are versatile offensively. They can shoot the 3, put the ball on the floor to create and pull up from mid-range.

Deyonta Davis vs. Skal Labissiere

We have another matchup where both players have similar skill-sets. Both Davis and Labissiere have flashed signs of becoming solid rim protectors. They each can finish around the basket. Labissiere has the better shooting touch, but Davis has the size advantage. This battle should be fun and intriguing.
