Monday evening presented the perfect ending to Mike Conley’s Memphis Grizzlies career as he added two NBA awards to his legacy.

As the Memphis Grizzlies await the official completion of their rumored transaction with the Utah Jazz, Mike Conley received the icing on the cake to his tenure with the only team he has known. The veteran point guard is bringing home two NBA awards for the 2018-19 season.

Conley took home two of the three NBA awards in which he had a legitimate shot at receiving. He won the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year award and the annual Sportsmanship award. The one he missed out on was the season-long NBA Cares Community Assist Award, which was given to Bradley Beal of the Washington Wizards.

Conley is an ideal representative for both awards he received. It would have been robbery if he had not received either or both of them. He has been a true professional throughout his 12 seasons in the NBA. He has a clean slate off the court. On the court, he receives nothing but praise from his coaches and teammates, both young and old, year-in and year-out. Plus, Mike respects the game officials, hence his amazing reluctance to pick up a single technical foul during his 12 professional years.

The award show, which was aired live on TNT, was a passing of the torch in the eyes of Grizzlies fans. Sophomore-to-be Jaren Jackson Jr. announced Mike Conley as the winner of his two awards, which was an emotional time for the newest member of the Jazz. Conley exits on a high note, but he leaves the franchise in good hands with Jackson Jr. ready for the challenge at just 19 years of age.

Monday’s news of the NBA awards makes it more difficult than it already was in saying goodbye for the Grizzlies’ all-time leading scorer. Though Memphis received a hefty return for Conley alone, many Grizzlies fans do not remember a time without “Captain Clutch” on the roster. Memphians may very well be the only fans in the league who truly appreciate Conley, who has been as good on both ends of the floor as any other point guard in the league.
