2 Studs and 2 Duds from the Grizzlies' 2-2 Start
Through four games, the Grizzlies have provided a lot of excitement with their style of play while also suffering lulls at the wrong time of their games so far. The team's depth has been a saving grace as injuries have piled up from the bench unit and have set the stage for what the rest of the season could look like once everyone is back to full health.
While the team looks to continue developing chemistry with its rotating pieces, here's what they have done well and what they need to improve on as the young season progresses.
Stud: Ball Movement
As of October 29th, the Grizzlies lead the NBA in assists per game with 31.8, led by Scotty Pippen Jr. with 8.3, and followed by Ja Morant with 7.3 (both in the top seven). The Grizzlies' new offensive system is predicated on consistently pushing pace and finding the open man, which the team is excelling at through four games.
Also, the team has improved the turnover problem they had during the preseason. After turning the basketball over 20 plus times in four of their five preseason games, the team is 14th in the NBA averaging 15 turnovers per game during the regular season so far.
Stud: First Half Offense
The Grizzlies have not scored less than 63 points in the first half through their four games played. The team is averaging 65.75 points per game in the first half and held a double-digit lead in each first half as the aggressor to begin the games. Also, the team is third in the NBA in pace with 105.21, behind only the New Orleans Pelicans and the Chicago Bulls.
DUD: Second Half Defense
As impressive as the Grizzlies have been in the first half of games, they have been as equally unimpressive in the second half, especially in the third quarter. The Grizzlies are a -49 through four games in the third, including allowing the Houston Rockets to go on a 17-0 and the Orlando Magic to go on a 21-0 run during the third quarters of those games.
The third quarter has been the team's kryptonite dating back to last season. The 37.25 points per third they are allowing has to improve as the team has been very lackadaisical so far in the third quarter this season.
Blown Leads
As mentioned earlier, the Grizzlies have held double-digit leads in all four games this season. Their shortest largest lead was against the Houston Rockets (12) and their largest was against the Orlando Magic (29). In each game, they have either allowed their opponent to come back to take the lead, win, or cut the game to single digits.
The team has a real case to be 4-0 or at the very least 3-1 right now. The fast pace they play allows for opponents to have a chance to make a run but the Grizzlies have to sustain them when they happen, especially in the third quarter.
