Former Memphis Grizzlies point guard Damon Stoudamire is returning to Memphis. Rejoining the University of Memphis as an Assistant Coach for the Memphis Tigers. After spending two seasons with the University of Arizona’s Wildcats, Stoudamire is ready for a Memphis comeback.
According to Realtor.com, Stoudamire has placed his Portland Mansion on the market. A big move especially considering Stoudamire is a Portland native. Leaving your hometown is always a tricky proposition. It likely means Stoudamire is going to be sticking around Memphis for a while.
The star guard spent his 2005-2008 seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies. Damon Stoudamire worked hard with Mike Conley in 2007. Conley then a rookie, Stoudamire the experienced veteran. He originally joined the Memphis Grizzlies on August 5, 2005 to replace starting point guard Jason Williams. J-Will was leaving for the Miami Heat, and the Grizzlies inked Stoudamire to a four year contract.
Stoudamire was previously a teammate of Grizzlies franchise star Zach Randolph. Last playing with the power forward in the 2004-2005 season on the Portland Trail Blazers. Damon Stoudamire would score a Trail Blazers franchise record 54 points against New Orleans on January 14, 2005. The 54 points included 8 three-pointers!
Damon Stoudamire’s Coaching Career
In February 2009, Stoudamire joined the Memphis Grizzlies coaching staff along with Henry Bibby (Mike Bibby’s father). He spent the 2009-2011 seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies as an Assistant Coach before joining the Memphis Tigers in May 2011. Stoudamire was noted for his enthusiasm during his Tigers run in 2011-2013.
He would go on to join the Arizona Wildcats in May 2013, where he originally played point guard from 1991-1995. Stoudamire led the team to the Final Four his junior year. He was also first-team All-American and a finalist for College Player of the Year. Arizona Coach Sean Miller stated Stoudamire ‘gave our players confidence and was an excellent teacher’. Miller wished him well in his future in Memphis as lead Assistant Coach.
Returning to Memphis will help Stoudamire be closer to his boys. It was a major factor in his decision to return.
