3. Hit Home Runs on Draft Night

Unlike the fortunate Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers, the Grizzlies only have one first-round pick (17th overall). This does not hinder the ability to find a gem that could help them in the playoffs as soon as next year.

There have been post-lottery diamonds such as Kawhi Leonard (15th overall in 2011) and Draymond Green (35th overall in 2012) and non-lottery rookie contributors on this year’s playoff teams, Toronto’s Norman Powell (46th overall) and Miami’s Josh Richardson (40th overall). The Grizzlies have never done well drafting.

While last year’s pick, Jarrell Martin, showed promise, this year’s draft is essential for the Grizzlies’ development. Denzel Valentine is a guy the Grizzlies should target. He is a versatile wing who can guard positions 1-4 and averaged 23 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists per 40 minutes last year.

He has the potential to wreak Draymond Green-like havoc, with the exception of the center position. His playmaking ability will help Mike Conley out, as he could probably slide in as a Day 1 starter at shooting guard or small forward.

The Grizzlies could also target future Marc Gasol replacements Skal Labissiere, Domantas Sabonis or Stephen Zimmerman or 3-and-D wings Taurean Prince, Caris LeVert, or Furkan Korkmaz.

It wouldn’t be surprising for the Grizz to take advantage of Brandan Wright’s contract to move up or down in the draft:

  • Wright, Vince Carter and 17th overall pick to Toronto for its lottery pick (acquired from either the Knicks or Nuggets).
  • Wright and the 17th pick to Utah for its lottery pick
  • Wright, Tony Allen and the 17th pick to Atlanta for Kyle Korver and the 21st overall pick.

Moving into the lottery can ensure the Grizzlies either grabbing Valentine or Labissiere, two guys who can make an impact on this team for years to come.
