Analyzing the Memphis Grizzlies’ Western Conference foes
5. Memphis Grizzlies
Overview:
The Memphis Grizzlies had one of the most injury-riddled seasons in recent memory. Now, with their Core Four back and the addition of Chandler Parsons, the Grizzlies are set to make some noise out in the Western Conference. Dave Fizdale’s ability to transition to a quicker offense and to squeeze every bit of potential out of his bench will determine whether Game 1 of the first round is at home or on the road.
Why the Memphis Grizzlies Could Go Higher:
Potent Starting Five
The Memphis Grizzlies have the potential to assemble one of the best starting lineups in the league. Marc Gasol, Mike Conley, and Chandler Parsons could be in All-Star discussions next season. At thirty-five years old, Zach Randolph can still go for a double-double each night. Tony Allen still has All-Defense ability.
If their starting five is healthy, they could easily challenge the Clippers and the Spurs for the two or three seed.
Why the Memphis Grizzlies Could Go Lower:
Catastrophe
Injuries. Lack of depth.
Marc Gasol, Chandler Parsons and Mike Conley all saw their seasons end due to injury last season. If they struggle to regain their top form, the Memphis Grizzlies could sink into a 6-8 seed or out of the playoffs.
The Memphis Grizzlies don’t have a great bench. JaMychal Green and Jarell Martin must take another step in their developments. Brandan Wright needs to be healthy. James Ennis must prove that his late-season New Orleans spurt was not a fluke. Troy Daniels has to show that he is more than a spot-up shooter. For the backup point guard position, if Wade Baldwin IV or Andrew Harrison show that they aren’t ready for the big leagues, they must sign a veteran point guard (Mario Chalmers, anyone?).
Projected Record: 51-31
