Analyzing the Memphis Grizzlies’ Western Conference foes
9. Houston Rockets
Overview:
The Houston Rockets finally broke ties with Dwight Howard. The signings of Ryan Anderson and Eric Gordon along with Mike D’Antoni’s hire should make this team reminiscent to his Phoenix Suns days. Lots of offense, no defense. James Harden’s numbers should increase even more, but it is hard to imagine this team making the playoffs. However, if Harden can become more of a leader, the Rockets could make some noise.
Why the Memphis Grizzlies Could Win:
The Front Court
Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph will more than likely face off against Ryan Anderson and Clint Capella in the post. Anderson is an atrocious defender. Clint Capella is a promising rim-protector, but Marc Gasol should bully him in the paint. If the Memphis Grizzlies could get 20/10 games from the Bruise Brothers, it’ll be commanding for them. Furthermore, if the Rockets decide to double the post, Chandler Parsons and Mike Conley will feast on open 3-pointers.
Why the Memphis Grizzlies Could Struggle:
Offensive Explosions
James Harden is already a top-five scorer in this league. With run-and-gun specialist Mike D’Antoni as head coach, Harden might challenge Westbrook for the scoring title this season.
While Harden is a focal point of the offense, the Rockets have three guys who could explode offensively: Eric Gordon, Ryan Anderson and Trevor Ariza. All of these guys could catch fire from the field. If they help Harden with the scoring load, the Memphis Grizzlies will have a challenging time keeping up with their offense.
Projected Record: 41-41
