Memphis Grizzlies: Has Mike Conley Officially Reached Elite Status?
By Jake Finnen
Mike Conley? Average?
Jake Finnen: Mike Conley is an average starting point guard, he doesn’t excel in any category. Shoots decently, quick, defense is solid. He can get to the rim, but that’s not a guarantee. He’s lucky he’s getting to show off on national television against the Spurs. If he didn’t have the ball as much he’d be a B/B+ guard, not even close to an All-Star.
Parker Fleming: So, a point guard who has led his team to the playoffs seven years in a row and has steadily improved each and every year is average? He averaged 20.5 points and 6.3 assists. Somehow, Conley has

even raised that level of play, scoring nearly 25 points and dropping seven dimes in this series. Without him, the Memphis Grizzlies would be the Western Conference version of the Brooklyn Nets. How is possibly to consider him average?
JF: Aight, So first of all, he’s going against Tony “Grandpa” Parker and Patty “I don’t play D, mate” Mills.
As for stats, yeah. Twenty points a game is nice but also only two points higher than Derrick Rose. If he wants to be a scoring guard, that’s fine, but has to be more than 20 points on a team that he basically runs (aside from Gasol who averaged 20 also). Not to mention, he averaged only half an assist higher than Isaiah Thomas. If you put him on any other team where he has to conduct an offense that revolves around more than Conley and Gasol, he’s not going to be as productive, albeit one of the best role playing point guards in the league.
PF: Yes, the point guards he’s gone up against this series aren’t prolific defensively, but he’s see most of his time against Danny Green and Kawhi – both are long, stingy defenders. The fact that he’s scoring 25 points a game against them is pretty impressive.
