As the season comes to an end, let’s review how each player on the Memphis Grizzlies has performed this season. Now, we look back on Zach Randolph’s season.

Many fans of the Memphis Grizzlies consider Zach Randolph to be one of the core founders of the “Grit and Grind” movement. For eight seasons, Z-Bo has served as a morale booster for not only the city of Memphis, but most importantly for his teammates. His original role was starting power forward, known for his tenacious rebounding and tough fadeaway jumpers. However, with JaMychal Green’s recent emergence as a starter, his minutes – and consequently his scoring contributions – took a hit.

Coming off the bench for 73 games, Randolph averaged 14.1 points along with 8.2 rebounds per game.

OFFENSIVE

Averaging 14 points off the bench, Zach consistently served as the strong push his teammates needed. Whether the team was leading by 20 or down by 10, whenever Fizdale looked to Z-Bo for scoring and rebounding opportunities, he was able to

    DEFENSIVE

Compared to his previous years, Randolph’s age and decrease in minutes took a toll on his defensive stats. He averaged less than a block and a steal per game. This season, Randolph wasn’t able to do much on the defensive end compared to his previous years as a defensive giant. However, his man-to-man defensive seemed to remain intact, often being paired up with dangerous bigs such as Aldridge, Griffin and several others.

    PROS

Coming off the bench after being a starter for most of your career can be a huge adjustment for any NBA player, regardless of their league tenure. However, after being informed he would be giving his starting spot up to JaMychal Green, Randolph quickly adjusted to his new role with the team and attempted to capitalize throughout the season. Randolph’s rebounding numbers helped the Grizzlies’ rebounding troubles immensely. Z-Bo’s scoring off the bench also gave the team a much-needed boost, especially in crunch time.

    CONS

Fans and sports analysts alike quickly noticed that Zach’s age has started to become a factor. His agility and strength in the low post has deteriorated, which could possibly be the reason why Fizdale’s replaced him in the starting lineup with younger, strong talent. With Zach’s free agency quickly approaching, the Grizz have a lot of important, time-sensitive decisions to make during the offseason.
