SF: Brian Cardinal

Brian Cardinal received the nickname “The Custodian” for his hustle and always ending up on the floor. Whether it was diving for a loose ball or taking a charge, Cardinal found a way to get his butt on the floor.

After a decent season in 2003 with the Warriors, the Grizzlies signed Cardinal to a six year, $37 million-dollar contract, the biggest free agent acquisition in their franchise history at the time. Former GM Jerry West had this to say about the acquisition:

"He will provide additional shooting in an area that we felt needed help. In addition, he has a very high basketball IQ that we obviously covet in all our players."

Cardinal had another decent season in his first year with the Grizzlies, averaging nine points on 35.4 percent shooting from behind the arc, 3.9 rebounds, two assists and 1.5 steals. After that, his stint in Memphis was brutal.

Ultimately, injuries ruined Cardinal’s career as a productive role player, and the Grizzlies were left wondering why they ever spent that much money on him for a long period of time. … Okay, from that point, I’m moving on.
