This weekend, the Memphis Grizzlies’ new G-League team in Southaven, Mississippi, will be having a fan festival. This brings up the opportunity to discuss some possible names for the team.
The Memphis Grizzlies have a lot of renovation going on this season, and a lot of people would agree that the biggest one is free agency. We all know the dynamic of the team has the possibility of looking completely different next season, but there are some other things happening as well. The Grizzlies are getting a brand new locker room. Then, the “Grizzlies Den” is being rebuilt as well. While there have been rumors of new scoreboard going up in FedEx Forum, it’s true the G-League team is moving from Iowa to Southaven, Mississippi – roughly 30 minutes away from Memphis.
Personally, I can’t wait for the G-League team to announce its new name. The Grizzlies will be holding fan events on Friday, June 2, from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. Fans will be able to meet players such as Andrew Harrison and Wayne Selden as they’ll be in attendance to sign autographs and have Q&A sessions.
This is big for the Memphis Grizzlies’ organization. The young guys don’t have to worry about flying to Iowa every time they’re assigned to the newly named “G-League.” The young talent will be right in their backyard. Now all the D-League assignees for the Grizz just have to jump on Interstate 55 to go play their games.
Now, let’s break down some of possible names for the new team:
1. Southaven Sounds
This is personally my favorite. I will be highly disappointed if this isn’t the name. It has a touch of the mid-south, and it goes with the city they will be playing in.
2. Memphis Sounds
Yes, I know I just said Southaven Sounds. But if it isn’t the Southaven Sounds, it has to be the Memphis Sounds right? Let’s give some dedication to the throwback ABA team.
3. Southaven Savages
I’ve heard this been throw in the mix a couple times. And, I’m giving this one a hard no.
4. Memphis Meerkats
This is one is courtesy of my great editor. It’s actually not a bad name. Even if it was, I would have to act like I did like it anyway.
5. Bluff City Bears
Solid name. I can dig it.
6. Grind City Groove
Personally, I enjoy this. But do you really want your team name to have Groove in it? Kinda soft if you ask me.

Closing Remarks
I’ve told you guys if it doesn’t have “Sounds” in it I’ll be disappointed. If they decide not to include the word “Sounds” in the name, they, at least, have to call it the “Memphis Meerkats” or the “Bluff City Bears.”
