Wayne Selden Jr. worked his way into the NBA from the D-league and has officially landed a two-year contract with the Grizzlies. Selden is an athletic player that adds needed youth and depth to the Grizzlies’ bench.

Twenty-two year old versatile wing Wayne Selden Jr. has proven himself on defense but still needs to work on his jumpshot before he sees consistent minutes. He excelled when given a starter’s workload and will absolutely be a key reserve for the Memphis Grizzlies this upcoming season. This deal should please Grizzlies fans as they have a secured a solid player with the ability to thrive in a faster-paced offense. Once his offense starts to click, he might find himself as the starting two guard in Memphis.

The Grizzlies have plenty of free agency news ahead of them, but this is a significant sign that Memphis is invested in the future. Whatever happens with the veterans Tony Allen, Zach Randolph, and Vince Carter will only signify what direction the Grizzlies are heading in. The quicker-paced offense proved to be proficient at times, but they still lack the firepower to compete the best in the West.

Now that Paul George has decided to become Russ’s newest accomplice, the Grizzlies need to start making moves. If they fail to secure another asset, the playoff streak Grizzly fanboys cling to is in jeopardy. Signing Selden is the first of what should be plenty of deals flowing out of Chris Wallace’s office, but to which players is still up for debate. Nene Hilario and the Rockets failed to make a deal, and he could be a cheap option to target if Randolph leaves.

There’s more to come on Nene, but if the Grizzlies decide to take a step towards the faster offensive schemes, you can expect JaMychal Green to be re-signed.

Selden is going to be a great player for the Grizzlies to have, and these next two years will be huge in his development as a player.
