Everyone in the West is making power moves to overtake the Warriors. “Swaggy P” Nick Young wouldn’t be a bad pickup for the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Western Conference has become scarier than ever before. Minnesota has acquired Jeff Teague and Jimmy Butler. Russell Westbrook, now, has the perfect sidekick in Paul George. Houston may have the league’s best backcourt in Chris Paul and James Harden. If Denver gets Paul Millsap, there’s another potential playoff team.
What have the Memphis Grizzlies done? Sign Wayne Selden and Kobi Simmons.
Awesome.
Right now, there hasn’t been much speculation with current Grizzly free agents. Zach Randolph has drawn interest from the Thunder, Clippers, Cavaliers and Kings. Other than that, Memphis has been pretty quiet.
Amidst the loudness of the West, there’s a way for the Grizzlies to get pretty loud: sign “Swaggy P” Nick Young.
Granted, he won’t push them to new heights. It’ll be rough to tackle the gauntlet of Golden State, San Antonio, Houston and Oklahoma City. However, signing a gunner like Nick Young could keep the Grizzlies relevant in the ultra-competitive Western Conference playoff race.
Making Memphis Swaggy for Once
A lot of Memphians may disagree with this move. They may think that Nick Young isn’t “Memphis enough.” Sure, they may be right, but he can flat score the basketball.
Ever since the days of Rudy Gay and OJ Mayo, the Memphis Grizzlies haven’t had anyone who could score in a hurry. Troy Daniels can get hot, but his defense often hurts him from being a consistent rotation player. Nick Young isn’t known for his defense, but he scores at a much better rate than Daniels.
Last season, Young scored 13.2 points a game on a scorching 40.4 percent from downtown. He hit the 3-ball at an elite level, but he also shot with regularity (seven attempts per game). The Grizzlies haven’t had a true gunner in awhile, and with the way the league is going, they should look into Young’s services.
Some nights, Grizz fans will beg and plead for Fizdale to take him out of the game. But when he’s on, the FedEx Forum will be as poppin’ as Beale Street on a Friday night.

Outside of Conley, healthy Parsons and Gasol, the Grizzlies lack any true scoring threats. Whenever there’s an off night, they need someone who could put the team on his back and get buckets.
Nick Young is one of the NBA’s best at getting buckets. #MakeMemphisSwaggyForOnce
