The Memphis Grizzlies have made many mistakes over the years when it comes to young talent. However, they may now have an opportunity to fix a past mistake.

Guilt can be a powerful thing. We have all done things that we aren’t proud of. Regardless of the life we live, we have to accept the consequences of our decisions. Sometimes, those consequences can haunt us for the rest of our lives.

However, sometimes life gives us one of those rare chances where we can correct a bad decision we made in the past. It’s almost like time-travel, if you will. We can change things where the pain of that past decision no longer matters in the grand scheme of things. An example of this would be getting back together with that ex-girlfriend that you should’ve never broken up with. Come on, you know you have that special someone, the one that got away. Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

The Memphis Grizzlies now have such an opportunity with Troy Williams.

Remember when the Grizzlies were looking for a consistent back-up point guard (the 2017 version, not the 2011-2016 version)? Chris Wallace decided that cutting Troy Williams, a young, athletic wing that had flashed alot of potential, to get Toneyy “Keyon Dooling 2.0” Douglas was the right decision.

Considering that Douglas was later benched for Andrew Harrison, it was a pretty terrible decision. Once again, the Grizzlies failed to develop young talent in favor of a short fix. All hope appeared to be lost. Until…

A new hope was born (last Star Wars reference, I promise)!

The Grizzlies should absolutely make Troy Williams a part of the team once again. An infusion of young talent on the wing is something this team still truly needs. Yes, Omri Casspi and C.J. Miles are both still available. However, the Grizzlies need to prioritize developing young talent instead of adding temporary veteran fixes. A cheap contract for a young player with plenty of upside is a great opportunity for Memphis.

Closing Remarks

This is more than just a chance for Memphis to add young talent on the wing. It’s also a chance to make a statement that the mistakes of the past won’t be the mistakes of the future.

Player development has simply not been emphasized in Memphis for too long. Troy Williams gives the Grizzlies a chance to fix a mistake of the past and set an example for the future.
