The Next Cornerstone

If you’ve been following Summer League basketball, you’re looking at this trade and saying “YES PLEASE!” If you haven’t, watch some highlights.

Losing Gasol is a tough pill to swallow, but Tatum’s potential is jaw-dropping. He can score in just about any way possible, and he’s a perimeter player the Grizzlies have needed since Rudy Gay was sent out of town. If the Grizzlies decide to move on from Conley too, Tatum is a guy they could look to as “the guy.”

If he could develop into a player that resembles prime Paul Pierce or Carmelo, the Grizzlies would win this trade in the long-run. It may be hard for Ainge to let him go, but the desire to win now could change his mind.

Closing remarks

Trading Marc Gasol would be a pain in the butt, given the return in recent blockbuster trades and Danny Ainge’s love affair with his assets. That’s really not important right now though.

Emotionally, it’s tough. Losing Zach Randolph – and possible Tony Allen – was hard enough, but trading away a player that truly grew up and became an elite player in Memphis is devastating. Never before – and maybe never again – have seen such a player in Memphis like him. However, if it’s time to move on, you have to do what you have to do.

Let’s just take all this Gasol rumors as what they truly are: rumors.
