Deyonta Davis played a solid game in their last contest against the Suns. As the Memphis Grizzlies enter the “Elite 8,” he must continue his brilliance.

After showing a lack of aggression on the offensive end, Deyonta Davis finally came alive in the Memphis Grizzlies’ last game against the Suns. In 19 minutes of action, he scored 16 points, connecting on seven of his eight field goal attempts. He’s always been able to finish around the rim, but he also flashed a nice mid-range game.

In this content against the Miami Heat, Davis must build on his outstanding offensive performance. Miami big man Bam Adebayo has turned some heads this offense, putting up huge scoring and rebounding numbers. Davis must use his experience and size to make his life more difficult in this game.

If Deyonta wants to earn a spot in the rotation next season, he has to contribute on offense. His defense is beyond his years. He can protect the rim and alter shots without a fouling – something that’s usually problematic for young big men. Davis is also athletic enough to switch on guards.

As the Memphis Grizzlies are looking towards the future, Davis is a major key for the transition. Marc Gasol isn’t getting any younger, and Davis seems like a suitable replacement. A string of good Summer League performances would help him earn the coaches’ trust and consistent playing time next season.

More to Watch

  • Does Wade Baldwin put an encore? In the last game against the Suns, Baldwin proved why he has a spot in the league. He scored 21 points, drilled two of his three 3-point attempts and grabbed seven rebounds. More importantly, he showed maturity and poise as the lead guard, hitting the game-winning layup to help the Grizzlies advance in the tournament. If Baldwin wants the keys to the second unit next season, he must pull of an encore performance.
  • Wayne Selden’s brillance. Selden, the undrafted second-year player out of Kansas, has been an animal in this year’s Summer League. He’s averaging 24.7 points on 44 percent shooting from deep. He’s certainly fallen into the “Too Good for Summer League” category as he’s flashed a versatile offensive game. If he can continue his brilliance this summer, he’ll find rotation minutes next season.
  • Dillon Brooks. After a standout performance against the Jazz, Brooks was quiet against the Suns. He only connected on two of his 10 shot attempts, scoring seven points. Brooks has helped the Grizzlies in a variety of ways whether it’s scoring, rebounding, making the right pass or playing hard-nosed defense. If his scoring is on, it’ll help the Grizzlies advance in the tournament.
