Who would be on Memphis Grizzlies Mount Rushmore? – Roundtable
Conley, Battier, Randolph, Gasol
Picking Mike Conley to be apart of the Grizz Mt. Rushmore is just keeping it simple. He’s the best point guard in franchise history, and he has helped lead the franchise to its only real postseason success. From his status as the “Masked Man” to his dominant play this past season, Conley will always have a place in Memphis lore.
Zach Randolph is easily the most obvious choice. We’ve written ad nauseam about how Memphis and Z-Bo were a perfect fit. He was the player who brought the needed culture change to Memphis to allow it to become a winner. Recent news shows that Zach is still a very flawed person, but all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Memphis is nothing if not forgiving.
Everything about Marc Gasol is paradoxical. He’s a hometown kid yet a foreigner. He’s a tough player who won’t back down from anybody, yet he’s full of finesse and would rather be on the perimeter. Gasol also has the talent of a player who can take over games, yet he’d rather be a good teammate. He’s strange, fascinating and excellent. And he deserves a place on the Grizz Mt. Rushmore.
Shane Battier is where it gets interesting. He’s the player who connects both eras of Grizzlies history. Throughout the 2000s, he was a very good role player on some solid Memphis teams. When he was brought back in a trade in 2011, he hit the game-winning shot in Game 1 of the series against the Spurs. Without him, the Grizzlies as a franchise wouldn’t be what it is today. — Nathan Chester
