Memphis Grizzlies: Revisiting Chandler Parsons Signing
By AJ Salah
Harrison Barnes – 4 yrs/$94 million
Hmm… where have we seen that number before…?
Barnes inking the exact same max deal as Parsons was initially also met with skepticism after his pathetic showing in the 2016 postseason. He’d turtled in a cushy role for the Warriors, and many questioned if his ceiling befit so much money.
Instead, he became an off-the-bounce threat, dramatically increasing his scoring clip, with similar efficiency amid far more defensive attention. With Dirk Nowitzki missing a large chunk of the Mavs’ season, Barnes was often their primary scorer, responding far better than anticipated.
Barnes also shot 39.5 percent from beyond the arc on almost five attempts per game last year, providing both the volume and accuracy Memphis lacked from deep. Because this need was the main reason for splurging on Parsons, those are huge bonus points.
When you factor in decent defense, a strong athletic frame, positional versatility and possibly upside to realize, Barnes would’ve been an immensely better use of $94 million. A max deal is perhaps still too much for him, but it’s a relative steal given the alternative.
