Memphis Grizzlies: Revisiting Chandler Parsons Signing
By AJ Salah
Dion Waiters – 2 yrs/$6 million
This tour wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Waiters Island, the remote destination that few dared to visit last summer. Waiters sat unclaimed for most of the offseason, settling in desperation for Miami’s offer.
Of course he blew up as part of the Heat’s midseason revival last year, matching or besting his career-highs in most major stats. His 3-point shooting (39.5 on 4.7 attempts per game) would have been of particular benefit to Memphis.
Now obviously Waiters plays the 2-guard, but slotting him as a swingman in an increasingly position-amorphous league wouldn’t have been beyond question. Waiters could’ve easily logged heavy minutes alongside Tony Allen, who can lock up virtually any opposing 3. Even a rangy athlete like James Ennis would’ve been a feasible running mate.
The financial implications are undeniable. Waiters’ year-one contract was pretty much couch change, while even his fancy new 4-year/$52 million deal brings back a significant rebate over their present cap dilemma.
