The Memphis Grizzlies have a more than full roster in the preseason. While hard cuts have to be made, this problem is a good one to have.

The Memphis Grizzlies have some hard decisions to make. They currently have 17 players competing for the final 15-man everyday NBA roster. Some of the possible include two recent first-round picks (Jarell Martin, 2015, and Wade Baldwin, 2016). One player is Andrew Harrison, a player who played huge minutes last season and the playoffs. Players raved about Deyonta Davis last season, but his time with the Grizzlies could end before his second season.

It’s going to be a hard decision. Each of these players could help this team in some capacity this season. However, there can only be 15.

Some see this as a huge problem, but it should be viewed as a great problem.

The Memphis Grizzlies, for the first time in a while, have an influx of young talent. Granted, none of these players have the jaw-dropping potential of hyped prospects Ben Simmons, Karl-Anthony Towns or Lonzo Ball. However, each of these young players can actually make a difference — a rarity from their prospects from the past few seasons.

Wayne Selden and Dillon Brooks can be the Grizzlies’ wings of the future as both players provide a two-way presence. Andrew Harrison and Wade Baldwin could be decent point guards in the future. Deyonta Davis can be a rim-runner who catches lobs on one end and swat shots at the other. Ivan Rabb and Jarell Martin can be match-up nightmares at the 4 position with their offensive versatility.

With all this being said, having to make two hard cuts can be a good thing for the Memphis Grizzlies. It gives them the chance to truly evaluate the team’s outlook for now and for the future. The Grizzlies have plenty of veteran talent who can replenish the loss of any hard cut. In the process, it allows the younger players who made it by the skin of their teeth another season to develop and hopefully contribute.

The Memphis Grizzlies have made some wrong choices in times like this. Look at Hassan Whiteside and Michael Beasley. Prime examples.

However, that’s a future Grizzly problem. For now, let’s relish the fact that the Grizzlies actually have capable young talent and might not have room for all of it.

That’s a great problem to have for a veteran team.
