5 players the Memphis Grizzlies should’ve picked over Wade Baldwin
No. 3: Dejounte Murray
Obviously, it’s just a normal Spurs thing, but we’re going to watch Dejounte Murray year after year — probably in Game 6 of the playoffs, facing elimination — thinking WHY DIDN’T WE TAKE HIM.
Like Baldwin, Murray possesses great size for a point guard (6’5″ with a 6’9.5″ wingspan) which gives him the potential to play alongside Conley. With his size, he can be a matchup nightmare defensively. In addition, he can guard either guard position.
He definitely needs to bulk up (170 pounds), but luckily he has the size and quickness to cover at the time.
Unlike Wade Baldwin, Murray can do two important things on offense: finish at the rim and shoot from deep. At Washington, he converted on 46 percent of his 2-point attempts. Though it was a small sample (23 attempts), Murray shot 39.1 percent compared to Baldwin’s 13 percent.
Last season, he got significant playoff minutes as the starting point guard once Tony Parker went down. While he had rookie pains, he flashed promise as an NBA point guard.
With the Grizzlies, he could’ve been a project worth investing in. Not to mention, he could be a point guard on this roster — backup or third-string.
Knowing just the laws of nature though, it’s probably the best for him to be a Spur.
