True Shooting Percentage: 55.3 percent (14th in NBA)

The Grizzlies are quickly conforming to the NBA custom known as the three-point shot. Memphis has posted the eighth-highest 3-point attempt rate, where they ranked 13th last year, and spent most of the prior decade in the league’s basement.

A positive effect in Memphis’ true shooting percentage correlates. They shoot a 14th-ranked .553 TS percentage after being 26th last season. It’s a marked improvement that has exposed new ways for Memphis to compete.

The comical irony is that the Grizzlies are actually shooting slightly worse from long range (33.8) than a year ago (35.4). Their increased efficiency on 2-pointers (combined with the flawed math of the 3-pointer) has buoyed their offense.

Try as Memphis might, they’re still largely masquerading as a modern NBA team. But their increased 3-point activity is creating more space, and is likely linked to their efficiency spike inside the arc.
