Grizz Nation and Beale Street Bears followers, the Grizzlies Stat Insider is here with the inside stats on the Memphis Grizzlies.
After starting a strong 7-4, the Memphis Grizzlies have struggled and have fallen below .500. It’s early in the season, but the Grizzlies need a plan to bounce back. Let’s talk to our stats insider about how the Grizzlies can get back to winning.
What are the Grizzlies +/- in the first 5 minutes after halftime?
It’s hard to tell. The Grizzlies in most games have struggled after halftime. Their fastbreak points are high as 12 to 15 points, per the first five minutes after the half. Based on the per possessions in each half, the number is at 48. The Grizzlies get fastbreak points, but perimeter and transition defense is killing them. The team as a whole struggle to defend the 3-point line (Houston and Indiana) and in transition (Milwaukee). Their plus minus within that timeframe would be -7.
Who has been the most efficient scorer in crunch time for the Grizzlies?
Out of all players, Mike Conley is the leading scorer per 36 minutes in crunch time (33.7). However, he’s only shooting 36.4 percent from the field in crunch time. In terms of +/-, James Ennis is the only player with positives at 9.6. Dillon Brooks though is the most efficient scorer in crunch time. In 10 crunch time appearances, Brooks is 4-6 (66.7 percent) shooting from the field. He’s also third on the team in scoring behind Marc Gasol (14) and Mike Conley (19) with 12 points.
Which starting lineup is the most efficient?
In terms of net rating, the current starting lineup of Chalmers, Brooks, Parsons, Green and Gasol is the most efficient. The least efficient, however, is the starting lineup of Chalmers, Harrison, Ennis, Martin and Gasol as they clock in with a net rating of -72.5.
Replacing Harrison, Ennis and Martin with a more productive trio of Brooks, Parsons and Green is the key in this difference. It’ll be interesting to see what swapping Chalmers for Conley will do for the starting lineup.
Who are the top and bottom 3 players +/-?
Based on the +/- rating the top three players are:
- Chandler Parsons +5.1
- Mario Chambers +4.5
- Brandan Wright +2.7
The least effective players are:
- Andrew Harrison -6.8
- Jarrell Martin -4.4
- James Ennis III -3.9
Which starter has been more effective on the floor?
Based on stats alone it would be Chandler Parsons, who’s averaging 8.6 points a game. He shoots 52.2 percent from the floor and 57.1 from free throw line. He also shoots 48.1 percent from deep.
This season, he’s been an efficient shooter, and he can knock down shots in tough moments. His impact on the floor with his driving and passing is what makes him stand out in effectiveness. His efficiency rating is 11.0 which is second to Deyonta Davis at 12.4.
Based on stats, does Dillon Brooks stand out as a rookie?
Only time will tell.
Brooks averages 9.2 points per game, but he doesn’t have the best percentages. He shoots 46.9 percent from the floor, 29.5 percent from deep and 72.4 percent from the free throw line.
These are normal numbers for a rookie. Compared to Lonzo Ball and Malik Monk, he’s scoring 0.2 more points per game as he’s 11th in scoring among rookies.
Defensively, Brooks’ steal average is less than Lonzo Ball and Ben Simmons as he’s sixth in steals among rookies (1.1). However, his defensive aggression against guys like James Harden, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and C.J. McCollum is what makes him an impact rookie. He gets steals and takes advantage of turnovers under pressure.
