What is the plan for the future for the Memphis Grizzlies? In short, it is very simple.

Tanking (or rebuilding if you are so inclined) is the way of the future for the Memphis Grizzlies. Whether the team is trying to tank is irrelevant; the point is that the Memphis Grizzlies will be near the bottom of the league for the foreseeable future. As it stands right now, they are in prime position to pick one of the top players in the 2018 draft.

However, what exactly does rebuilding mean for this franchise? Is it a full rebuild in which the team looks to move both Marc Gasol and Mike Conley for young players and assets? Or is it a smaller rebuild in which the team still looks to compete over the next few years?

The answer is simple: The Grizzlies hope to add a top-tier talent in the NBA draft and reload to make another run at the playoffs next year. Recent rumors suggest that the team has no interest in trading Marc Gasol. The market may simply not be big enough for the Grizzlies to trade an injured Mike Conley along with a declining Marc Gasol.

Though the situation is bleak now, it’s important to remember that this current roster still has potential. Even though Mike Conley was already hobbled, the Grizzlies were 7-5 before he went out. Chandler Parsons has shown flashes of being the playmaker the Grizzlies need. There are other intriguing young pieces on the team.

Undoubtedly, it is far from a guarantee that the Memphis Grizzlies will make the playoffs next season. However, with the addition of a Trae Young or Marvin Bagley, they may be able to find themselves in the mix once again next year.
