Memphis Grizzlies vs. New Orleans Pelicans (1/10) Preview

MEMPHIS, TN - OCTOBER 18: Dillon Brooks
MEMPHIS, TN - OCTOBER 18: Dillon Brooks

Much has changed since the Memphis Grizzlies edged out the Pelicans on the season opener. What needs to happen to make the series 2-0?

When the Memphis Grizzlies beat the New Orleans Pelicans on 10/18, it was a preview of how dominant this team could be. Mike Conley scored 27, Dillon Brooks put on one of the best debut performances in Grizzlies history, and Marc Gasol put up a double-double. The team looked like it could beat anybody.

Since then, a lot has changed.

The Grizzlies are puttering to the All-Star break, on track for a high draft pick. Meanwhile, the Pelicans are holding on to the 8 seed on the playoffs.

What are the keys to the game? Can the Grizzlies make this series 2-0?

Keys to the game

  • Capitalize on Anthony Davis’ absence (if he doesn’t play)

Currently, Anthony Davis is listed as doubtful for tonight’s game after suffering a right ankle injury against the Detroit Pistons on Monday night. The Pelicans are 3-2 without Davis this year, but his impact is undeniable. To be successful tonight, the Grizzlies need to smother DeMarcus Cousins throughout the game and make Jrue Holiday and Rajon Rondo beat you. This could be difficult, seeing as Cousins is having the best statistical season of his career.

  • Get the 3-point shot going

DeMarcus Cousins is a giant, and getting inside for easy buckets will prove to be extremely difficult. The Grizzlies need to figure out how to get the 3 to drop, since the Pelicans’ outside defense is nowhere near as dominant as their interior defense.

  • Let the youth play

Marc Gasol hasn’t looked engaged this year, especially on the defensive end. Boogie Cousins is an elite offensive center, and I’m anticipating a monster game from him this game. If it gets out of hand quickly, the Grizzlies should take the opportunity to pull Marc and Tyreke Evans out and let guys like Deyonta Davis, Dillon Brooks, Kobi Simmons and Jarrell Martin get some time on the court to develop.
