The Memphis Grizzlies traveled to Denver for a one-game road trip, before a three-game homestand. However, they couldn’t come away with the win.

This game was the epitome of the Memphis Grizzlies’ performance as of late. They jump out to a first quarter lead. In the second quarter, the opponent creeps back while the Grizzlies still hold the lead. In the third quarter, they go ice cold and look lethargic on offense. Meanwhile, they also give up the lead. In the fourth quarter, they can’t do enough to come away with a victory.

You’ve heard that story before, right?

The difference with this game though is that it was a doozie on both sides. Neither team really played good basketball. Denver couldn’t even crack 90 points as a team that averages 106.8 points a night. They couldn’t get standard production from Nikola Jokic (14 points on 3-8 shooting from the field and three assists) and Jamal Murray (11 points on 1-7 shooting from the field).

Given the Nuggets’ circumstances, it looked like a game the Grizzlies could steal against one of the better home squads.

Instead, they squandered away the game and only scored 78 points — only tallying 31 points in the second half. Marc Gasol had a solid scoring night as he had 22 points and 11 rebounds. However, he was an inefficient 8-19 from the field. Tyreke Evans had an off game as he only scored 12 points on 5-13 shooting. After a 20-14 outing, JaMychal Green only came away with five points on 2-9 shooting and seven rebounds.

Overall, it was just a game you’d expect from a bottom-dweller team. The opposing team is a playoff contender and played down to your level. However, you can’t capitalize on it to come away with a momentum-shifting win.

This game was simply the story of the Memphis Grizzlies’ season. They couldn’t get anything on offense as everything on that end looked completely stagnant. There also wasn’t that fire from any of the players on the court.

If the Grizzlies decide to follow suit with the “lottery” mindset, expect more outings like these.

Let’s see if they can turn it around on MLK day as they battle the Los Angeles Lakers.
