What the Super Bowl means for teams like the Memphis Grizzlies
It’s a pretty strange comparison, right? However, the Philadelphia Eagles may provide some hope for teams like the Memphis Grizzlies.
Everybody loves a good “David versus Goliath” story.
On the other hand, no one likes to see the rich just get richer. It becomes painful to see things end the way that everyone expects them to. In life, it seems like the Goliaths win more often than not.
However, that was not the case last night.
The Philadelphia Eagles toppled the New England Patriots in thrilling fashion. Though most of America seems to hate the Patriots, very few expected them to lose in the Super Bowl. Yet somehow, the Eagles, a team that had never won a title, managed to do it.
Dynasties have always been present throughout the leagues of pro sports. For the NBA, the current dynasty is the Golden State Warriors–and they show no signs of slowing down. That’s what tends to happen when a team has two of the top three players in the world.
Fortunately, destiny is never set in stone.
The New England Patriots at times have appeared to be unbeatable over the years. When you have arguably the greatest quarterback and coach ever, it’s not hard to win games. They are the best-run and greatest organization in the NFL.
Yet, as the Philadelphia Eagles showed, they are not infallible.
Last night, the Super Bowl revealed a beautiful truth about sports: No one is unbeatable, and anyone with the right decisions and luck can win a championship.
Let me clear when I say that the NBA and NFL are completely different leagues. After all, the NFL has a single-elimination playoff, while the NBA has seven-game series. The best NBA team generally wins the title more often than the best NFL team.
However, if a team like the Philadelphia Eagles, who had never won a title before, can topple a dynasty, perhaps an unexpected NBA team could. Maybe, just maybe, a team like the Memphis Grizzlies could topple the Warriors in the next few years.
Sure, it would take years of great decisions and a lot of luck along the way. The Warriors would also have to lose some steam as well.

Do I actually think that this will happen? Not at all. To quote C-3PO, the odds of it happening are probably 3,720 to 1. I’m probably being pretty generous with those odds.
Nevertheless, it wouldn’t be the first time that a team who had never won a championship rose to relevancy, as the Philadelphia Eagles have. No one is ever too far gone from contention.
The Golden State Warriors very well may run the NBA for the next eight years. Or maybe they won’t. Regardless, teams like the Memphis Grizzlies can take some hope from a truth that the Super Bowl revealed.
Nothing is inevitable. Expect the unexpected.
