The Memphis Grizzlies have had plenty of misses in the NBA Draft. It is still unclear whether Jarell Martin is one of them.

The NBA draft has been, ahem, unkind to the Memphis Grizzlies over the years. For every Mike Conley, there is what feels like endless mistakes that have greatly hurt the franchise.

However, it has been nearly three years, and we still aren’t sure whether Jarell Martin is one of them.

Jarell is just kind of there. He definitely hasn’t lit the world on fire by any stretch of the imagination. He also has been just good enough to not get cut.

Usually, if a player is going to be good, they start to show flashes within their first or second year. And yes, Jarell Martin has shown some characteristics of a swiss army knife type playerb–someone who can do a little bit of everything. Unfortunately, he doesn’t display them with any kind of consistency to make it feel meaningful.

When describing Jarell Martin, inconsistency is the word. Though it would have been laughable last season, there are times where you can logically wonder whether Martin has a higher ceiling than JaMychal Green. However, there are also times where you wonder why he is even on the court.

Let’s be clear on this: Jarell Martin is a very talented basketball player. If you are able to be in the NBA for three years, that is just a fact. He clearly has the tools to have a successful career. He also very well may not have a long career in the NBA.

Regardless, time is running out for him. His NBA career was almost brought to an untimely end when the Memphis Grizzlies announced that they were going to cut him before the season. He may have played his way into staying on the roster, but he could face the same situation after the season is over.

Sooner rather than later, Jarell Martin will have to prove that he has a future role with the Memphis Grizzlies.
