Kobi Simmons seemed to come out of left field in Summer League, but has been outstanding since signing a two-way contract with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Kobi Simmons was a guy that was only a rotation player at the University of Arizona. In one year, he averaged less than 10 points per game. Then, he decided to take his talents to the NBA when many said to be patient. Simmons and his family knew what he was doing. He signed a Summer League contact with the Memphis Grizzlies, and since then has done nothing but impress.

Currently still signed to his two way contract, Simmons played in 12 games for the Grizzlies before the All-Star break. So, what are Kobi’s strengths and weaknesses?

Strengths

The first one is pretty easy, but his athleticism is pretty unique. He’s always going to be one of the quickest guys on the court. Not only is he fast, but sneaky strong for his build (which will get better over the years).

His IQ for the game is another strength Simmons has as a rookie in the NBA, which is rare. We’ve seen Simmons flash for a quick offensive rebound, or find the open guy in the corner on a drive. He knows the game and has been groomed well.

Having the IQ and athleticism makes me think that Simmons will get a multi-year deal from Memphis after this season.

Weaknesses

It is pretty easy to jump on a rookie for his inconsistency this season, but playing in only 12 games simply is not fair. Here is where I think he needs to improve for his career’s sake: shooting the rock.

Simmons has a nice smooth jump shot, showing flashes of shooting from long range. However, his consistency has to be key moving forward.

Adding muscle for in-game physicality will be big moving forward as well for Simmons.

Overall, Simmons has things to work on just like Dillon Brooks, Ivan Rabb, and Deyonta Davis. All these players are still young, and finding their roles on this roster and in the NBA for years to come, but they have a bright future.

For Simmons, if he continues asking for advice from veterans like Mike Conley and Mario Chalmers, he’ll be just fine in his progression in Memphis.
