No. 4: Harry Giles

Original pick: 20th

Let’s start with the player that was actually selected with the 20th pick in last year’s draft.

Harry Giles was one of the biggest enigmas in the entire draft class. The former number one pick was plagued with knee troubles, but has tantalizing potential. Back in November 2016, Bleacher Report compared him to Kevin Garnett and Amare Stoudemire – raving about his two-way potential and his physical tools (6’10” with a 7’3” wingspan). However, prior to draft night, that comparison fell to Bobby Portis or a “springier Amir Johnson.”

Given his injury history, Giles probably wouldn’t have been an ideal pick for the Grizzlies; they’re already dealing with players with more than their fair share of injuries. In addition, he would be joining a crowded group that includes JaMychal Green, Jarell Martin, Deyonta Davis, stretch-4 Chandler Parsons and Marc Gasol. Even as a “redshirt rookie,” it would be hard to see his fit with the Grizzlies. If he reached his ceiling, he’d be worth the pick, but having two torn ACL injuries before he hit the NBA would be too risky for the talented-depleted Grizzlies.

Giles will forever remain one of the biggest questions and what if’s in recent memory. His two-way potential though is intriguing. The question is, whether or not he achieves it. Even reached half of his potential seems like a big win.
