Marc Gasol is a lean and mean NBA center, but he has not always been so lean.

Today, April 22nd, is Earth Day.

The NBA does not have a special celebration for the annually-recognized Earth Day, but Beale Street Bears is honoring it with a look at Marc Gasol’s physical transformation.

Gasol, a 7’1″ center of the Memphis Grizzlies, has completed his 10th season in the National Basketball Association. Though he is 33 years of age, he continued to play greater than 70 of 82 regular season contests and averaged 33.0 minutes per outing.

It does not take a person very long to realize a secret to Marc Gasol’s sustained excellence for the Grizz. Follow him closely on social media and you will find something very unique about his life off of the court and away from basketball.

“Big Spain” played this season at 255 pounds. He not only looked lean on the hardwood, but the scale was proof, too.

Gasol grows his own fruits and vegetables. He personally harvests his crops. This leads to healthier living and he now has a hand in seeing what exactly comprises the nutrients his All-Star body receives via meals. He has shared his lifestyle on his Twitter account in the past, as shown directly below.

You could probably count the number on one hand of NBA players that grow their own fruits and vegetables and/or cut their own grass. The Memphis Grizzlies’ Marc Gasol is one of those very, very few guys.

Earth Day is meant to serve as an annual reminder to protect the environment and cherish the land we live on as well as the world we live within. If you are an NBA fan, you can relate to Marc Gasol if you truly want to keep Earth healthy and full of life. It can provide personal benefits as well.

For those that may not have followed Marc’s full hoops career — pre-NBA — his transformation is quite remarkable. Taking a look back at a tweet made by Marc, it is amazing how far he has developed since his high school days at Luasanne Collegiate School (Memphis, Tennessee).

Though the Memphis Grizzlies had an abysmal 2017-18 season — finishing with a 22-60 record — Gasol’s bill of good health is a promising sign for an improved 2018-19 season.

The Grizz need to received a healthy Mike Conley. Assuming both Memphis stars can remain in the lineup together, it is not hard to imagine this ball club battling for a playoff position this time next year. Anything is possible in the wild Western Conference.
