5. 211. Scouting Report. 2001 - Round: 1 / Pick: 6. Shane Battier. Pick Analysis. SF. player

Ahead of the first season in Memphis, the Grizzlies took Shane Battier sixth overall in 2001 following a great career at Duke University that included a national title.

His impact on the creation of this list is the same impact he had in Memphis and at every stop during his career. He showed up when I needed a momentum change, the fact that he’s here makes me better, and it just can’t be overstated how essential his contribution has been.

He wasn’t just a glue guy either. He was a really good defensive player who could match up with guards and forwards if needed. Offensively, he was at least good enough in every area, averaging 10 points over his career and he developed to become better than average in terms of percentage from three, from the free throw line and on the rest of the floor.

There are a handful of plays in every close game that aren’t measured by stats but make the difference between winning and losing — taking charges, diving after a loose ball, fighting through a screens, closing out on a shooter, etc.

The plays that are made by mentality, discipline, intelligence, instincts, and effort were the plays that Battier made night in and night out his entire career and the Grizzlies win total from 2001-2006 is lower without it.

Being the fan favorite, the team’s identity, and a pillar in the community don’t really factor into these rankings but still warrant a mention.
