NBA Draft: Memphis Grizzlies’ Pick Relies Upon Phoenix Suns’ Move
Question: What is the Phoenix Suns’ biggest hole to fill, based on position or role, that the NBA Draft could solve?
Lucas Johnson: “This Draft is unlike most drafts, in regards to the plethora of talented big men at the top of the Draft. Players like Deandre Ayton, Marvin Bagley III, Mohamed Bamba, Wendell Carter Jr. and Jaren Jackson Jr. all have the potential to make a major impact on a franchise. While the Phoenix Suns have needs at both point guard and center, this Draft will allow the Suns to have a much easier time fulfilling the need at center.”
Gerald Bourguet: “For the team that finished with the league’s worst record, point differential, offensive rating, and defensive rating, pretty much every position feels like one of need, other than on the wing where Devin Booker and Josh Jackson play. With that being said, it’s probably center. Point guard is a big need as well, with Elfrid Payton unlikely to return and Tyler Ulis looking like a pure backup, but with Tyson Chandler turning 36 this summer and Alex Len being an unrestricted free-agent, finding a top-tier big man in the Draft would make sense. That’s especially true with local product Deandre Ayton sitting there at No. 1. Luka Doncic’s playmaking and shooting would make him an intriguing fit with Booker, but he’s not a true point guard, so it feels like center is the Suns’ most pressing need — something General Manager Ryan McDonough has confirmed himself.”
