Memphis Grizzlies: Early NBA Rookie of the Year Odds
By AJ Salah
Harry Giles, Sacramento Kings (+2500)
Much like Michael Porter Jr. this year, Harry Giles was a top-tier high school recruit who slid in the draft due to injury concerns. He spent the entire 2017-18 season sidelined with a bum knee, leaving the door open for his ROY candidacy.
Giles is somewhat of a mystery. His frame, athleticism and skill set all indicate NBA success. However his multiple ACL tears are a huge red flag, as is the franchise he currently plays for. There’s literally no telling how his career will shape up, but the upside is tremendous.
Michael Porter Jr, Denver Nuggets (+1600)
A year removed from Giles, Michael Porter Jr. was another top prospect who plummeted on Draft Night after throwing his back out early his freshman season.
While he certainly has the potential — and now motivation — to prove the sleepers wrong, his rookie role will be heavily capped. The Denver Nuggets are a young team on the come-up. They are looking to make serious strides after missing the playoffs as closely as possible last year.
They will also be welcoming back Paul Millsap, who missed most of 2017-18 and plays the same position as Porter. A team without the onus to win now might give their rookie some room to grow, but Porter will have to earn every minute he plays.
