When the Memphis Grizzlies begin to think about rounding out their roster for the upcoming season, they should seriously look at Brandon Goodwin.

Brandon Goodwin is an interesting summer league guy to keep an eye on. He has played well so far for the Memphis Grizzlies. Some think he is a candidate for a two-way contract, though it is more likely finds a spot in the G-League.

Goodwin spent some time at two Florida universities during his time in college to help him prepare for the NBA. He has had some troubles in his past as well, which forced him to leave UCF for Florida Gulf Coast. Brandon Goodwin is a player to watch on the Grizzlies’ front through the remainder of summer league play.

College Career

Brandon Goodwin started his college career at the University of Central Florida. He had some success there during his two years with the school. He started nine games during his freshman year. He grew by starting all 30 games during his sophomore season while posting averages of 10.2 points and 4.2 assists per game.

Goodwin would have to leave the school after that season, though, due to off-court issues. He got kicked off the team at UCF after he was caught stealing a bike on campus. Goodwin used it to get to class as he later returned it, but that did not matter. There are a lot of rumors as if that was the only reason he got kicked off the team, but he did, so there is no point in discussing those.

That is how he ended up at Florida Gulf Coast for his junior and senior seasons. Brandon Goodwin was a star during his two seasons in Fort Myers. They originally recruited him out of high school in 2013, so they were very glad to get him even if it was a few years later than they originally intended.

After redshirting the 2015-16 season, Goodwin came out and balled the next two years. He averaged 18.5 points, 5 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game in his two seasons with FGCU. He won the Atlantic Sun Player of the Year award during his senior season in 2017-18.

NBA Summer League

Brandon Goodwin has not been a huge factor on the offensive end this summer, but he has shown that he can score the ball effectively. He has not had a game where he just lit up the stat sheet, but he has been effective every game.

It is more than the stats that stand out with Goodwin. He seems to fit in very well with the rest of this young Grizzlies squad. He is capable of pushing the ball up the floor, which has been something that this team has done well for the most part.

Goodwin has consistently gotten at least a few rebounds per game this summer, which could be a sign that he has that toughness that the Memphis Grizzlies need to have. He has made some really good passes this summer as well. He has shown that he could be a stud for the Memphis Hustle if he is not on the Grizzlies’ full-time roster next season.

What Are His Possible Options?

Brandon Goodwin and the Memphis Grizzlies seem to only have two options. It is either a two-way contract or a G-League contract. While he has played great this summer, it would be shocking if he were to get any more than a typical G-League deal.

The Grizzlies have so many guards that I do not see there being enough room for him to get a two-way deal. Kobi Simmons will likely be on a two-way deal, so I do not see how Goodwin would get one, too.

If the Memphis Grizzlies decide to move on from a guy like Andrew Harrison or Ben McLemore, then maybe there exists a slim chance. If that does not happen, there is no way Brandon Goodwin makes the Grizzlies’ roster out of training camp for the upcoming season.
