The Verdict

All in all, Jimmy Butler clearly has his sight set on joining a large maket franchise, regardless of team record or being surrounded by multiple NBA All-Stars. Plus, any trade would be to acquire Butler for a one-season rental as his contract expires at the end of the upcoming 2018-19 season.

With Jimmy obviously interested in a larger market, it is hard to fathom Memphis, Tennessee being a place that he would spend for more than one full season. Even if the squad plus Butler reached the postseason, he looks to be set on joining the Nets, Clippers, or Knicks.

Perhaps the biggest motivation for the Memphis Grizzlies do get a deal for Butler done is to offload Chandler Parsons’ max contract, though they would still pay more than $20 million to Jimmy Butler in 2018-19. There is a Player Option tied to Butler’s contract for the 2019-20 season, but it seems as if he will “cash in” and opt out of his current deal when he is able to do so. For the Grizzlies now, it is not a bad decision to play it safe and see what a healthy Parsons is capable of producing.

Jimmy Butler may not think of Memphis as a place for him to thrive, but there is plenty of proof that the Grizzlies could be an ideal location for his skill set. If it were more about wins and less about egos and money, then perhaps a trio of Jimmy Butler, Marc Gasol, and Mike Conley would come to fruition.
