“In my eyes, one particular guy in training camp to keep an eye on is rookie Jevon Carter. A few days ago, he was not expected to be cleared for five-on-five full contact until three or more weeks from now. That all changed when he was miraculously cleared over the weekend.

Jevon is a workhorse. A thumb injury did not stop him from going all-out in workouts to prepare for training camp. Going hard prepared him for this week. There is no way he will miss it. He healed like Wolverine from the surgical procedure.

When a guy has this strong of a work ethic, especially as a second round pick, it should make some veterans look over their shoulders. You may not be expecting much from a second rounder, but once you see Carter take the court and bring the defensive intensity, jaws start to drop. It should not be a surprise if Jevon Carter’s name becomes the talk of the town by the Memphis Grizzlies‘ first preseason game.

Alternatively, a name that should be a disappointment this week is that of Yuta Watanabe. Being placed on a two-way contract, Watanabe is not meant to be a total game-changer in his first professional season. He is a raw talent and has a long way to go in order to reach a level of game readiness.

If it were not for all the media hype surrounding Yuta, the pressure would not be placed on his shoulders. Not only does he have Japanese media targeting him, but it caused quite the stir at Grizzlies Media Day on Monday. Yuta Watanabe was a major talking point, and Grizz Nation should not get overhyped about the prospect just yet.

It will take time. Quite a bit of time.

It will be interesting to see how Yuta progresses as a member of the Memphis Hustle in 2018-19. Being on a two-way contract, there is an outside chance the Grizzlies call his name to receive a glimpse of the speed behind the NBA game.

The Memphis Grizzlies may have a major steal on their hands, but do not expect to hear the coaching staff raving about the George Washington product this soon. This season, he is strictly a developmental project.”
