Rookie Initiation

Lots of people seem to think the Memphis Grizzlies had a strong defensive draft. Jevon Carter is an indomitable bulldog, and Jaren Jackson Jr is a fleet-footed albatross. Both are great fits on paper for the franchise’s defense-first culture.

The James Harden/Chris Paul two-headed monster is probably the most potent hybrid-PG backcourt in NBA history, and a perfect chance for Carter to cut his teeth early. While Memphis will obviously want to test Mike Conley’s health, they can stagger minutes so Carter gets time against the league’s very best.

Likewise, the Rockets are a team custom-built for Jackson to showcase his talents. They start their own long-striding gazelle in Capela, and love the switch & swing game that JJJ’s skill set can snuff out.

Reputations aside, there will be growing pains for these two, like with any rookies. But a first game providing such great opposition is the perfect breeding ground. The experience will provide lots of teachable moments, and a very relevant glimpse of what life in the NBA will be like.
